Have you ever had God speak to you in a “supernatural way?” Perhaps a word spoken in perfect timing from a dear friend. Maybe a book you read had a sentence that pierced your heart in a moment of need. Possibly the timing of an event was so unbelievably accurate that only God could orchestrate the specifics.
I’ve learned in my life that as I walk closer with Him I begin to see His fingerprints on my life. Undeniable, unarguable God stories that one couldn’t make up if they tried. These events in my life are where my head knowledge of God beautifully transforms into heart knowledge from experiencing God. Moments where beyond any reasonable doubt I know God is moving in an ever present, all knowing, all capable manner.
I had one of these moments a few weeks ago that I want to share.
A couple of weeks ago I was in a situation that made me highly uncomfortable. For personal reasons I can’t really get into the specifics of the situation, but, they really aren’t important. What is important is for you to know that I was confronted with physical fear, possible danger, emotional distress, and taunts from a haunting past all at once. I was overwhelemed and found myself begging God to hold me securely in His arms. My fraility as an emotional being and my lack of trust in God had left my heart restless.
I believe God showed up in the strangest of places so that He could speak to my heart so undeniably that I would have no choice but to just rest and trust in Him. One evening a couple of weeks ago when I was really struggling emotionally my family and I went out to chinese food. At the end of the meal our fortune cookies came out. Now first let me say, I don’t really believe the silly fortunes that are often found in these cookies. But, I do enjoy reading them just for fun– and I love the bland and lightly sweet flavor of a crunchy fortune cookie! It’s just a nice traditional way to end a Chinese feast.
We had six cookies brought out to us. I distributed each cookie to my impatient toddlers and kept one for myself. As I opened my cookie and read the paper my jaw literally almost dropped to the floor:
God looks out for you especially.
I sat there frozen for a minute. “God, is that you?” I thought to myself. I could almost hear a chuckle from heaven as I’m sure God must have shook His head and thought, “How much more obvious can I get?”
Being the cynical skeptic I admittanly am, I quickly grabbed each of the kids fortunes. They must all be “Christian” fortunes I thought. I mean, in all my life of Chinese eating… I had never seen a fortune cookie with the word God on it. But– to my shock– everyone else had the traditional fortune. You know: Good health will be upon you. Your travels will lead you to exciting places. Follow your curiosity for it will enlighten you. Blah, blah, blah.
I was reminded then that God has a way of getting ahold of our hearts when He wants to, regardless of how stubborn, hard headed or unaware we in our humanity can be. When He wants to get your attention, watch out…He will! Peace flooded my heart that evening that could only come from the amazing knowledge that God was literally “looking out for me.”
John 14:27- Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
